NAIL TECHNICIAN LICENSE REQUIREMENTS IN TEXAS

Qualifications for a nail technician license through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation only takes a few steps.  Follow these steps for approval from the Texas Advisory Board on Cosmetology.

Complete the nail technician school requirements in Texas.

The nail technician program is a requirement to legally do nails in Texas.  The program consists of at least 600 hours of coursework and training.  Coursework covers various procedures, bacteriology, sanitation, safety, professional best practices, tools, laws, as well as anatomical functions.

Register for exams and licensure.

The examinations required by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation are contracted through the PSI testing company.  The written and practical examinations will need to be passed to be eligible for a license.  You are able to apply for a temporary permit once you pass the practical exam.  This permit is valid for 21 days and will allow you to work until the Department processes your 2-year license.

If you already have a nail technician license from another state, you may be eligible for a transfer to Texas.  This is called a reciprocity license.  You will still need the minimum 600 hours curriculum and need to pass both the written and practical exams.

Pass the Written & Practical Nail Technician License Exams.

You can prepare for the exams online at PSI’s examination site.  The written exam consists of six categories in which you are allotted 100 minutes to complete.  The categories are as follows:

1. Sanitation, disinfection, and safety – 27

2. Client consultation and analysis – 8 questions

3. Manicure and pedicure – 7 questions

4. Nail tips and nail wraps – 7 questions

5. Gel and acrylic nails – 6 questions

6. Regulations and licensing – 5 questions

The practical exam requires demonstrating procedures on a model that is at least 16 years of age.  You will have 90 minutes to complete this exam.  The procedures you will be evaluated on are as follows:

o Disinfection and set up and disinfection – 10 minutes

o Manicure service using your model – 25 minutes

o Nail tip application on one nail of your model’s hand – 10 minutes

o Nail wrap on one nail of your model’s hand – 15 minutes

o Acrylic nail application on one nail of your model’s hand – 20 minutes

o End of exam disinfection – 10 minutes
